Home Sweet Home School

I would have never thought in a million years we would ever be in a pandemic, wearing masks, and our kids wouldn't be able to attend school this fall.  We are staying positive and looking forward to the new school year and I wanted to share some fun ideas with you on how you can make this school year the best one yet.

I am so thankful that the school my children attend has wonderful teachers and is well organized for distance learning. I have all of their school books, workbooks, schedules and everything they need. The teachers sent a list of school supplies the kids would need and I feel very blessed for our school, teachers, and all of the hard work they have put in before the school year has even started. I am thankful that I have a bachelor of arts degree in Liberal Studies and though I have never had my own classroom, I have substitute taught for over 10 years where my children now attend school. I feel with my degree and background substitute teaching I will be just fine homeschooling the kids.

We wanted to make sure we were prepared for this school year, so I wanted to share some ideas about how we are setting up school in our household. I am sure right now everyone is nervous, stressed, worried, but just remember to have fun, lower your expectations, and do the best you can!

I always love to take back to school photos of the kids. I usually do it every year at a location that has a brick wall, but due to the pandemic I ordered a brick wall backdrop and took the photos right in my own backyard. I have had this vintage desk for years, but I am sure if you search CraigsList or other selling sites you might be able to find one locally. I added this fun easel that we have had since Carter was a toddler, books related to starting school, a globe, and other fun school supplies.  Kennedy's backpack is from J.Crew Kids, but it is from last year.  Her dress can be found here.

We decided to set Kennedy up in our study. That is where my home office is and that is where I spend most of my time working on the computer, so I thought it was best to have Kennedy close by so I could help her and be able to listen to her meetings. We bought her a white table and chairs. I put up a cork board and added important school printables that I think will help Kennedy throughout the year. I found a caddy to help hold some of her items and I think her little area turned out really cute. She loves it and that is all that matters.

Carter already has a desk in his room, so we thought it would be easiest to set him up in his room. He also has a caddy and all of his school supplies are organized and ready. He is excited for the new school year and I know he will do great.

I know I will be getting my exercise walking from the study to Carter's room all day so I can listen in on meetings and make sure both kids are staying on task.

We love reading children's books that are about getting ready for school and going to school. Yes, I know this school year will look different from years past, but I want to make sure the kids are excited and it will be a fun experience. Here are some books that we love.

Dog Days Of School By Kelly DiPucchio

The Pigeon Has To Go To School By Mo Willems

Pete The Cat Rocking In My School Shoes By James Dean

Splat The Cat By Rob Scotton

I Promise By Lebron James

In our study I decided to decorate as if they were going to school.  The kids loved it and I think it turned out so cute.  All of these books can be found above and most of the plush dolls are on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

I love this 3 tier I have from Pottery Barn.  I always use it for holidays and parties.  I just added anything I could find around the house that was school related like books, paint, play-doh, glue, and fun banners.  These banners can be found here.

This is the bar cart we have in the kitchen.  I just added a few things to the bar cart to make it festive and fun for back to school.  The red banners are a free printable and you can find them here.

I always try to make breakfast on the first day of school fun and festive.  You can find all the printables for a back to school breakfast here.

Follow me on Instagram here and I am sharing more details and swipe up links to more homeschool supplies and decor (just check my IG stories and highlights).  You can also follow my Pinterest school board here for more printables and ideas.

Besides the school supplies here are things that I have been ordering for the school year.
