Last Days, directed by Justin Lin, tells the true story of 26-year-old John Allen Chau, a young missionary whose unwavering faith leads him on a dangerous journey to the remote North Sentinel Island. Determined to reach one of the world’s most isolated tribes, Chau’s mission becomes a haunting mix of courage, conviction, and tragedy as an island detective races to stop him before disaster strikes.

The film is visually stunning, capturing both the beauty and danger of Chau’s surroundings with sweeping cinematography and an evocative score. Sky Yang gives a deeply human performance as Chau, his portrayal feels sincere, conflicted, and heartbreakingly determined. Lin keeps the tension high, especially in the final act, as Chau’s faith collides with the reality of his mission.

Where Last Days struggles is in tone and focus. At times it can’t quite decide whether it wants to celebrate Chau’s devotion or question the ethics of his choices. The movie raises important questions about faith, cultural boundaries, and the price of obsession, but it doesn’t always dig deep enough to answer them. Still, it’s an emotional and thought-provoking story that lingers long after the credits roll, leaving viewers to wrestle with the same questions that drove Chau himself.  See Last Days in theaters October 24th, 2025.
