Win or lose, Pixar's first ever original series is a homerun. It is beautiful, heartwarming, engaging and funny. All of the characters are relatable and the storytelling is very smart. The animation is gorgeous, filled with light and texture so realistic you can feel it through the screen. You can watch the first two episodes now on Disney+ a new episode will premiere every Wednesday. There are a total of 8 episodes and each episode is under 25 minutes.
The series reveals what it feels like to be in the shoes of eight different characters: the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire as they prepare for a championship softball game. Win or Lose centers around a different character who is on or related to the Pickles, an elementary school coed softball team tracing their paths leading up to the big game. Each episode reveals a different character's perspective on the same day, showing their funny, emotional, relatable and different experiences.
I think this series is fantastic. Not only do you see what happens to each character, you see a visual representation of what their emotional experiences feel like. For example, the insecurities weighing on outfielder Laurie manifest as a heavy grey blob. Each episode focuses on a particular character and my heart goes out to every one of the characters. The series is engaging and I like how each episode adapts its animation style to fit the character it is focusing on during that episode. All of the characters are so compelling. The entire voice cast is great. They could not have chosen a better cast to voice these characters.
Win or Lose has a strong message about empathy and understanding. By seeing a story through various characters' eyes, the series reminds us there are always multiple sides to every story, especially in parent-child relationships. Also the important message is that you never know what it is like to walk in someone else's shoes. It also shows there is more to winning or losing in a game. The real focus is on the emotional journey of each character, not just the outcome of the game. The series is entertaining and educational. Win or Lose reminds me of Inside Out and Turning Red, films that are about emotions from a child's point of view. I give Win or Lose 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 18, plus adults. You can watch the first two episodes now on Disney+ and a new episode will premiere every Wednesday. Thanks for listening.
