RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN In Theaters Friday, June 30

Sometimes the hero you are meant to be lies just beneath the surface.  Today we went to DreamWorks Campus in LA to an underwater Prom where we screened Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.  We always love visiting DreamWorks.  It is so beautiful and always so much fun.  We screened the movie and enjoyed delicious foods, a live band, ice cream, cotton candy, cookies, face painting, sand art and more.  It was truly an undersea adventure.  Watch our fun reel here to see all the fun we had today.

This summer, DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed.  Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible.  She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water.  When Ruby breaks her mom’s #1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.  The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons. There’s one major and immediate problem: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.

The movie is rated PG and it is 1 hour and 30 minutes long (which I love).  An animated children's movie doesn't need to be longer than 90 minutes.  This movie keeps your attention from the moment it starts until the very end.  You will immediately fall in love with Ruby and the animation is beautiful.  It is a film everyone will love.  It is about empowering women. Kids will relate to Ruby.  She embodies every aspect of becoming a teenager.  The movie is about her journey of trying to figure out where she fits in, but what she learns is that the thing that makes her different is what makes her really special.

I think Ruby becomes a wonderful role model. The movie is about self acceptance and having the guts (or gills) to be who you are!  Ruby's story is about empowerment and learning where you belong rather than where you just fit in.
